There are two type of student visas. You can apply for a six month visa as a "prospective" student, where you have not yet decided either on the course or the institution. If you do not need an entry clearance as a student visitor, you will have to satisfy the Immigration Officer that you qualify for entry to study when you arrive in the UK.
